Brief History of The Big Rocking Horse
This massive rocking horse was designed by David McIntosh and John Twopenny (the latter was also the brains behind The Big Orange in Berri). The construction of The Big Rocking Horse took around 8 months, costing over AUD 100,000. The end result, officially launched in 1981, was a massive, 25-tonne rocking horse with three steel viewing platforms.
The self-proclaimed World’s Biggest Rocking Horse has had a rocky life. After the official launch, it changed hands several times due to legal and insurance reasons. Finally, it settled at its current location along Torrens Valley Road, Gumeracha.
Fun Things to Do at The Big Rocking Horse
The giant rocking horse is particularly fun for kids. For a small fee, they can climb this enormous structure. But that’s not all – they’ll get a certificate stating that they climbed the world’s largest rocking horse!
Away from the rocking horse and toy factory, you’ll also find a petting zoo and a cafe on the premises. At the petting zoo and wildlife park, which sits on approximately seven acres, you’ll find a wide range of animals native to Australia and other continents.
You’ll probably not enjoy climbing the rocking horse if you’re scared of heights. The three viewing platforms are located at the head, saddle and base of the massive structure.
