The History of The Big Rubik’s Cube
The Big Rubik’s Cube in Maroubra is a replication of a Rubik’s Cube found at the shores of Maroubra, East of Sydney, New South Wales. From its location, it appears to have been washed ashore by water waves.
But the sudden appearance of the Big Rubik’s Cube dates back to one night in 2008. Initially, the Rubik’s Cube was a huge concrete block that sat on a stormwater drain at the beach.
Two local artists thought that the concrete block deserved a makeover. One night, they decided to paint it into the form of a Rubik’s Cube as a friend stood by, watching out for the police. It took six hours to complete the transformation from a dull concrete block to a Rubik’s Cube. The next morning, locals woke up to the new look of what was once a plain concrete block.
The huge cube has become a favourite spot for many visitors at the beach, adding vibrant colours to the already beautiful atmosphere.
The Big Rubik’s Cube has close similarities to the Big Dice found along Barrier Highway in South Australia, also made out of a concrete block.
